CHAIN, CHAIN, CHAINS!

All the little things, oil on canvas, 20 x 24 inches
I’ve been painting away and my Disco Romance series is evolving into chains, chains, and more chains!
I first got inspired by chains when I made a necklace for my best friend Joe when I moved to New York. He has the best collection of antique and new chain necklaces I’ve ever seen. I was at the hardware store and saw brass hardware link chains and the next thing I know I was braiding black jersey into the links and ended up making a very organic necklace that he still rocks to this day:

(fur not included – hah!)
I then did an (what I like to call “decadent”) installation during my first Summer Residency at SVA with plenty of hanging chains and gold:

These chains then translated into my oil paintings of chandeliers and disco balls:

Now I’m focusing on the chains as a primary subject and they function very much like the disco ball does for me. They all read like layered light and are multi-dimensional. I absolutely love using browns, reds, and purples to create a mysterious aura that personifies the chains in a way. This new piece “All the little things” is also much smaller than I’m used to painting, which makes for a more intimate effect.
These new chain pieces will be on view and available for sale as part of my first STUDIO SUNDAYS on October 24th from 3pm-6pm. I will also have many works on paper and chain necklaces and accessories available for $100 and under. Come on by and bring friends, it’ll be a party!
